John White Alexanders „Repose“, gemalt im Jahr 1895, ist eine heitere und introspektive Darstellung einer Frau, die in einer kontemplativen Pose ruht. Die Komposition betont die anmutigen Linien und fließenden Gewänder der Figur, wobei weiche, gedämpfte Farben eine Atmosphäre der Ruhe und Besinnung schaffen. Alexanders Verwendung von Licht und Schatten verleiht der Szene Tiefe und Subtilität und unterstreicht die Friedlichkeit des Augenblicks. Dieses Gemälde spiegelt das Interesse des Künstlers wider, die Schönheit ruhiger, alltäglicher Momente mit einer raffinierten und feinfühligen Note einzufangen. Alexander, der in den 1890er Jahren in Paris lebte, erzielte mit seinen Studien von anmutig in eleganten Innenräumen posierenden Frauenfiguren internationalen Erfolg. In diesem Beispiel spiegeln der provokante Gesichtsausdruck und die geschmeidigen Kurven den zeitgenössischen französischen Geschmack für sinnliche Frauenbilder sowie die wellenförmigen linearen Rhythmen des Jugendstils wider. „Repose“, dessen Modell dekorativ in einen weißen Stoff gekleidet ist, wurde in einer französischen Zeitschrift als Porträt von Loïe Fuller (1862–1928) verspottet, der amerikanischen Tänzerin, die für ihre Manipulation wirbelnder Seidenfalten bei ihren Auftritten im Folies Bergère in Paris berühmt war.
